Not long ago, a gentleman asked me a very interesting question about setting up auto detailing at high-end golf courses in a Northern colder climate. He had contacted me because before retirement I had franchised mobile detailing units, and I have quite a bit of experience in setting up accounts at car dealerships, regional malls, automotive centers, and with mobile auto detailing going to businesses and corporations to clean cars. Detailing cars is a good business, but it has some drawbacks. Let's talk.
You see, he wants to use "steam units" to do this, as they work in cold weather, and give hardly any run off, that makes sense right? Well, yes and no.
Now then, with regards to this gentleman's idea, it seems such an opportunity at those golf courses, at least in his area, would be too seasonal to be a reliable year-round business. I am not sure it really makes sense. The concept of using "straight steam" may not be wise due to the debris on cars in the winter time there; it would simply take too long. The potential issues with run-off for single car washes is minimal with a pressure washer, you can clean an average car with just a couple gallons once you get good at it - plus if you sprinkle a little salt on the parking it, it won't make ice to slip on.
Now then, with all this considered, does this concept of his make sense? Well, here are my thoughts to you in case you might be considering something similar, thus, you searched online to find this particular article. Personally, I wouldn't go for it if I were you, why you ask? Well, I've never liked the "steam concept" or the "dry wash" alternatives, I believe them to be totally inferior in all regards to using a pressure washer, far too time consuming and labor intensive, so I think this would be a terrible mistake, I wouldn't do it if I were you.
There are much better accounts than this, besides "you should sell to the masses if you want to live with the classes," and I wouldn't recommend becoming a lacky type service for snobbery, but hey you can decide on that. And while there might be ancillary opportunities in "meeting the right people" you still have to make money to pay labor and manage it all properly.
This is not to say that there would not be good business during the summer months when the country club and golf course was open and in full swing. There is a definite need for higher-end clientele to get their cars cleaned, and I'm sure they would stay very busy on nice summer days. That's without question. Perhaps the issue is how many nice summer days will there be in that region? You see my point. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on.
